Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

The first thing that comes to our mind when butterflies are running in our stomachs is Momos.

Yes!

This mouth-watering dumpling food aka Momos is making our lives merrier and happier! Well! It’s still unclear on how exactly Momos came to India but probably it is a delicious outcome of Tibetan refuge or Newari merchants of Nepal who must have brought the recipe to India. But anyway it’s never enough to thank Tibetan or Nepalese to bring this scrumptious meal to India. The word ‘Momo’ originated from the Tibetan term ‘Mog Mog’ -thus MoMo. The dish spread along the caravan routes of northern and central Asia; thereby hitting the Indian subcontinent and the mountainous regions of North India.

Steaming related FAQ

Stainless Steel Momo steamer or Aluminium Momo steamer can be used that are usually available on amazon/flipkart

To prepare your steamer:
– Fill the steamer vessel with water.
– Heat the water until it reaches a boiling temperature.

Yes, it’s recommended to slightly grease the perforated steamer vessels with oil. Alternatively, you can use a silicone mesh to prevent the momos from sticking to the vessel.

Place the frozen momos in the steamer, making sure they are not touching each other. This allows for even cooking and prevents them from sticking together.

Cover the steamer with the lid and steam the momos for 5 to 6 minutes, or until they are fully cooked.

Yes, you can use any type of steamer as long as it allows you to maintain the boiling water and keeps the momos from touching each other. Adjust steaming times if using a different type of steamer.

If the momos are not fully cooked after 6 minutes, steam them for an additional minute or two. The exact time may vary depending on the size and type of the momos.

Yes, you can steam momos in advance. If you do, make sure to keep them covered and warm until ready to serve. Reheat them by steaming for a few minutes if needed.

If the momos stick, it might be because the steamer wasn’t greased properly with oil or the silicone mesh was not used. For future steaming, ensure that the vessel is well-greased with oil or that you use a silicone mesh to prevent sticking.

While steaming in a traditional steamer is recommended for best results, some microwaves come with a steaming feature. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for steaming momos in a microwave if you choose to use this method.

To achieve the best texture, ensure that:
– The water is boiling before you start steaming.
– Momos are not overcrowded in the steamer.
– You steam at a consistent temperature for the recommended time.

Deep Fry related FAQ

You need enough oil to fully submerge the momos. This ensures they cook evenly and achieve a crispy texture.

Preheat the oil to medium heat, around 170°C (340°F). This temperature is ideal for achieving a golden brown color and crispy texture.

You can test if the oil is hot enough by carefully dropping a small piece of bread or a tiny bit of batter into the oil. If it sizzles and starts to float, the oil is ready.

Once the oil is hot, carefully add the frozen momos to the pan. Be sure not to overcrowd the pan; this allows the momos to cook evenly and become crispy.

Deep fry the momos for about 4 minutes, or until they turn a golden brown color. This ensures they are fully cooked and have a crispy exterior.

If the momos are not crispy, it may be due to the oil not being hot enough or overcrowding the pan. Ensure the oil is preheated to 170°C and fry in smaller batches for the best results.

Yes, you can use a variety of oils for deep frying, such as vegetable oil, canola oil, or peanut oil. Choose an oil with a high smoke point for best results.

To minimize oil splatters, make sure the momos are fully frozen before adding them to the hot oil, and carefully add them to the oil to avoid sudden temperature changes.

After frying, place the momos on a paper towel-lined plate to drain any excess oil. This helps to keep them crispy and less greasy.

Yes, you can reheat leftover fried momos. For best results, reheat them in an oven or air fryer to retain their crispiness, rather than using a microwave which may make them soggy.

Tandoor Momos Cooking FAQ

Steam the momos for 3 minutes to cook them partially before marinating.

You can use marinades like Hariyali or tikka, depending on your taste preference.

Cover the bowl with marinated momos and refrigerate them for 20 minutes to let the flavors soak in.

Thread the marinated momos onto skewers, ensuring they are evenly spaced for even cooking.

Cook the momos on each side until they are hot inside and have a slightly charred exterior, indicating they are cooked through.

Place the skewered momos on the grill and cook them on each side until they are cooked through and have a slight char.

The momos are fully cooked when they are hot in the center and have a crispy exterior with a bit of char from the grill.

You can use a regular grill for making tandoor momos. A tandoor adds a traditional touch, but a standard grill will also work well.

If you don’t have skewers, you can place the marinated momos directly on the grill, using a grill basket or a tray if necessary to prevent them from falling through the grates.

Pan Toss Cooking FAQ

First, steam or deep fry the momos until they turn golden brown. Steaming will result in a softer texture, while deep frying will make them crispy.

Heat a tablespoon of any cooking oil (such as vegetable, canola, or olive oil) in a pan over medium heat.

Add the steamed or deep-fried momos to the heated oil and sauté them until they become slightly crispy. This step adds texture and flavor.

Once the momos are sautéed to your desired crispiness, pour the prepared gravy over them.

Stir the momos into the gravy and let them simmer for about 5 minutes to allow the flavors to meld and the momos to absorb the gravy.
